What sort of smoke-trail does a KC-135 make? And what sort of flight pattern is possible for this sort of plane (meaning, is it a fairly horizontal pattern, or can these planes quickly climb up in altitude on a nearly vertical pattern?

Spotterjt, these are the questions we're trying to answer here. You're in the right place for sure. Welcome! The KGTN is centrally located in the Chicago area (although not all members are reporting from here) and I know we don't see many KC-135s coming in and out of Ohare or Midway, if at all, unlike say, Denver. So, if you're also in Chicagoland, the vertical pattern may have been from when a plane is approaching directly from the horizon. Sometimes it looks like a it's going straight up. At least that's what I've experienced.
